If you ask any working actor how they first got an agent or got their call for an audition, without a doubt most will say ‘their headshot’.
There is a reason why successful actors get seen it’s a great headshot, and I chose the wording carefully: great headshots. Not just any headshots.
Headshots are photos of you, the actor, looking as attractive and marketable as possible. This may mean exploring different looks to show your range, or being creative and having headshots that stand out from everyone else’s. Simple enough, right?
Well, sort of. Actors tend to not place enough emphasis on headshots, instead asking themselves, Do I have a friend with a camera who can take pictures of me leaning up against my apartment building looking pensive? Awesome! Got my headshots!
What actors fail to realize is that the first meeting they were expecting from an agent, the meeting that would show what they actually look like — the headshot was that meeting. And if headshots are bad, blurry, or look cheap and unprofessional, there will be no second meeting. Your headshot does your business for you and opens doors that you might personally not be able to…and closes doors just as fast. If it looks like you invested very little time, money, and effort into your headshots, it says a lot about you as an actor and how seriously you take this business.
